Here is some safety information related to concrete pumping.

Hazard Identification:

  • Risk of injury due to the moving parts of the pump machinery
  • Risk of injury due to the high pressure of the concrete
  • Risk of injury due to the weight of the concrete
  • Risk of injury due to falls from heights
  • Risk of injury due to contact with concrete or machinery

Risk Assessment:

  • Likelihood: High
  • Consequence: High

Control Measures:

  1. Plant and Equipment:
  • Ensure that the pump is in good working order and regularly maintained
  • Ensure all safety devices on the pump are functioning correctly
  • Ensure that the area around the pump is clear of any debris or other objects that could cause an obstruction
  • Ensure that all hoses and couplings are properly connected and secured
  • Ensure that the pump is positioned on a stable surface
  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
  • Ensure that all workers wear appropriate PPE, including steel-capped boots, hard hats, high-visibility clothing, and gloves
  • Ensure that workers who are operating the pump wear additional PPE, such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and respiratory protection
  1. Safe Work Procedures:
  • Ensure that workers are trained in the safe operation of the pump and that they understand the hazards associated with the task
  • Ensure that workers follow safe work procedures, including proper use of the pump and hoses, safe work at heights, and proper lifting techniques
  • Ensure that a spotter is present to assist the pump operator and to watch for any hazards or obstructions
  1. Communication:
  • Ensure that workers communicate effectively with each other, including the use of hand signals or two-way radios
  • Ensure that workers communicate with other workers in the vicinity of the work area, including other trades, to ensure their safety

Emergency Procedures:

  • Ensure that workers are trained in emergency procedures, including the shutdown of the pump in the event of an emergency or malfunction
  • Ensure that workers know the location of first aid equipment and how to use it

Gary’s Safety Tips

Hey there, my friends! Today, we’re going to talk about something that’s not glamorous, but it’s a very important topic when it comes to construction: concrete pumping. Now, you might be thinking, “Gary, what’s so dangerous about concrete pumping?” Well, my friend, the answer is quite a lot!

First of all, let’s start with the basics. Concrete pumping is the process of using a machine to transfer liquid concrete from one place to another. It’s commonly used in construction because it allows for faster and more efficient pouring of concrete, especially in hard-to-reach areas. However, it’s important to understand that this process can be dangerous if proper safety precautions aren’t taken.

One of the biggest dangers of concrete pumping is the risk of hose whipping. When the concrete is being pumped through the hose, it can create a lot of pressure, which can cause the hose to move violently and potentially injure anyone in its path. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to use a whip restraint system, which is designed to hold the hose in place in case it starts to whip.

Another danger of concrete pumping is the risk of hose blockage. This can happen when the concrete in the hose starts to harden, which can clog the hose and create a blockage. This can cause the pressure to build up and potentially lead to the hose bursting. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to properly clean the hose after each use and to use the appropriate size hose for the job.

In addition to these risks, there are also dangers associated with the equipment itself. For example, the concrete pumping machine can be very heavy and difficult to maneuver, which can put the operator at risk of injury. It’s important to make sure that the operator is properly trained and that the machine is regularly inspected and maintained to ensure that it’s functioning properly.

So, what can you do to stay safe when working with concrete pumping? Here are a few recommendations:

  1. Make sure that everyone involved in the job is properly trained and familiar with the equipment. This includes not only the operator of the concrete pump, but also the workers who will be working around the pump.
  2. Use a whip restraint system to prevent hose whipping. This will help to keep everyone in the area safe in case the hose starts to move violently.
  3. Use the appropriate size hose for the job to prevent blockages from occurring. It’s also important to properly clean the hose after each use to prevent any hardened concrete from clogging it.
  4. Inspect the equipment regularly to ensure that it’s functioning properly. This includes checking the hoses, pumps, and other components for any signs of wear or damage.
  5. Wear appropriate safety gear, including hard hats, safety glasses, and gloves. This will help to protect you from any flying debris or other hazards that may be present.

Overall, concrete pumping can be a safe and efficient way to pour concrete, but it’s important to understand the risks involved and to take appropriate safety precautions to prevent accidents from happening. Remember, safety always comes first!

That’s all for today, my friends. Stay safe out there, and until next time, keep hustling!

Cheers,
