Here is some safety information related to formwork.

Hazards and Risks: Some of the hazards and risks associated with foundry work include:

  • Burns from hot metal and molten metal
  • Eye injuries from flying debris and sparks
  • Hearing damage from noise exposure
  • Musculoskeletal injuries from lifting heavy objects
  • Respiratory problems from exposure to dust and fumes
  • Chemical burns from exposure to hazardous chemicals

Control Measures: The following control measures should be implemented to minimise the risks associated with foundry work:

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): All workers should wear appropriate PPE, including:
  • Heat-resistant clothing and gloves
  • Hard hats
  • Safety glasses or face shields
  • Respirators or dust masks
  1. Safe Lifting Techniques: Workers should be trained in safe lifting techniques to prevent musculoskeletal injuries. They should use lifting equipment such as cranes and forklifts to move heavy objects.
  2. Hot Work Permits: A hot work permit should be obtained before any welding or cutting work is done in the foundry.
  3. Fire Prevention: The foundry should have adequate fire prevention measures, including:
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Smoke detectors
  • Fire alarms
  • Clear access to emergency exits
  1. Chemical Safety: Workers should be trained in the safe handling of hazardous chemicals. They should wear appropriate PPE and follow the instructions on the labels of the chemicals.
  2. Noise Control: The foundry should implement measures to control noise levels, such as:
  • Use of noise-reducing earplugs or earmuffs
  • Enclosing noisy machinery in soundproof enclosures
  • Scheduling noisy work during off-hours
  1. Ventilation: The foundry should have adequate ventilation to prevent exposure to dust and fumes.
  2. Machine Safety: All machinery in the foundry should be regularly maintained and inspected for safety hazards. Workers should receive training on the safe operation of machinery.

Emergency Procedures: In the event of an emergency, the following procedures should be followed:

  • Call for medical assistance if needed
  • Evacuate the area immediately
  • Sound the fire alarm
  • Use fire extinguishers to control small fires
  • Follow emergency exit signs and procedures

Gary’s Safety Tips

Hey there, my friends. Today, I want to talk about something that is very important for all of us who work in the industrial field – foundry work. Now, foundry work can be a dangerous business, but it doesn’t have to be. By taking the proper safety precautions, we can all work safely and efficiently in the foundry.

First, let’s talk about some of the dangers of foundry work. One of the biggest dangers is the risk of burns. Molten metal can reach temperatures of over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause severe burns. In addition, foundry workers are also at risk of inhaling harmful fumes and dust, which can lead to respiratory problems.

Another danger of foundry work is the risk of injuries from heavy equipment and machinery. Moving machinery, sharp edges, and heavy loads can all pose a risk to workers if proper precautions are not taken. And finally, foundry work can also be hazardous due to the noise levels. Exposure to high levels of noise over a prolonged period can lead to hearing loss and other health problems.

So, what can we do to protect ourselves from these dangers? First and foremost, we need to make sure that we are wearing the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes heat-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and face shields to protect against burns and flying debris. We should also wear respirators to protect our lungs from harmful fumes and dust.

In addition, we need to be trained on how to properly operate and maintain machinery and equipment. We should always follow proper lockout/tagout procedures to prevent accidents while working on machines, and we should never attempt to operate machinery without proper training and authorisation.

Another important safety measure is to keep our work areas clean and organised. Cluttered work areas can lead to accidents and injuries, so it’s important to keep our tools and materials organised and put away when not in use.

And finally, we need to be aware of the potential hazards around us and take action to mitigate them. For example, we can use noise-cancelling earplugs to protect our hearing, or we can use machine guards and barriers to prevent accidental contact with moving machinery.

In conclusion, foundry work can be dangerous, but by taking the proper safety precautions, we can all work safely and efficiently. Remember to wear the proper PPE, be trained on machinery and equipment, keep our work areas clean and organised, and be aware of the potential hazards around us. By doing so, we can all stay safe and healthy while working in the foundry. Stay safe out there, my friends!

Cheers,
