The goal is to determine the likelihood and severity of harm that may result from these hazards and to put in place measures to prevent or control them. Risk assessments are a legal requirement under Australian workplace health and safety legislation, and failure to carry out proper risk assessments can result in serious penalties.
Now, once we have identified the potential hazards, we need to create a plan of action to mitigate them. This is where Safe Work Method Statements come in. SWMS are written documents that outline the steps that workers should take to complete a specific task safely. They describe the hazards associated with the task and provide detailed instructions on how to mitigate those hazards. SWMS are crucial because they help workers to understand the risks associated with their work and how to perform their tasks in a safe manner.
