Here is some safety information regarding TIG welding.

Purpose: This Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) outlines the measures and procedures to be followed during Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding to ensure a safe work environment for all employees involved in the task.

Scope: This SWMS applies to all employees involved in TIG welding activities.

Hazard Identification: TIG welding is a hazardous task that involves the use of high temperatures, flammable gases, and electrical currents. The following hazards have been identified:

  • Burns from the hot metal and welding torch
  • Electric shock from the welding equipment
  • Exposure to harmful welding fumes and gases
  • Fire and explosion risks from flammable gases and materials
  • Slips, trips, and falls due to the welding cables and equipment

Risk Assessment: The following control measures have been identified to mitigate the risks associated with TIG welding:

  • Burns: All employees involved in TIG welding must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as welding gloves, aprons, and face shields to protect themselves from burns.
  • Electric shock: All welding equipment must be tested and tagged regularly to ensure it is in good working order. The use of residual current devices (RCDs) and circuit breakers is mandatory to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Exposure to welding fumes: Adequate ventilation must be provided to remove welding fumes from the work area. Employees must also wear appropriate respiratory protection equipment to reduce their exposure to harmful fumes and gases.
  • Fire and explosion risks: All flammable materials must be removed from the work area before commencing welding. Welding must not be carried out near or on flammable materials. All welding equipment must be checked before use to ensure there are no leaks or defects.
  • Slips, trips, and falls: All welding cables and equipment must be kept tidy and well-organised to prevent slips, trips, and falls.

Control Measures: The following control measures must be implemented during TIG welding activities:

  • All employees involved in TIG welding must undergo appropriate training and hold valid welding licences or certifications.
  • All welding equipment must be checked before use to ensure there are no leaks or defects.
  • Adequate ventilation must be provided to remove welding fumes from the work area.
  • All flammable materials must be removed from the work area before commencing welding.
  • All welding cables and equipment must be kept tidy and well-organised to prevent slips, trips, and falls.
  • All employees involved in TIG welding must wear appropriate PPE such as welding gloves, aprons, and face shields to protect themselves from burns.
  • All welding equipment must be tested and tagged regularly to ensure it is in good working order.
  • The use of RCDs and circuit breakers is mandatory to prevent electrical hazards.
  • All employees involved in TIG welding must be aware of the emergency procedures and the location of fire extinguishers and first aid kits.

Emergency Procedures: In the event of an emergency during TIG welding activities, the following procedures must be followed:

  • Stop welding immediately and turn off all welding equipment.
  • Evacuate the area and alert other employees.
  • Call the emergency services if necessary.
  • Use fire extinguishers to extinguish any fires.
  • Administer first aid to any injured employees.

Review and Approval: This TIG Welding Safe Work Method Statement must be reviewed and approved by a competent person before commencing any TIG welding activities. This SWMS must also be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure it remains relevant and effective.

Gary’s Safety Tips

G’day everyone, it’s great to be here with you today to talk about a topic that’s near and dear to my heart: developing safe work method statements for high-risk environments. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Gary, that sounds boring!” but trust me, it’s anything but. When it comes to ensuring the safety of our workers, we cannot afford to be complacent. So, let’s dive in and explore how we can develop effective safe work method statements that keep our workers safe.

First and foremost, we need to understand what a safe work method statement is. Essentially, it’s a document that outlines the steps that need to be taken to complete a high-risk task safely. It’s not just a list of tasks, but a detailed plan that takes into account the potential hazards, the equipment needed, and the experience and training of the workers involved. A good safe work method statement should also include a risk assessment, a step-by-step guide for completing the task, and emergency procedures in case something goes wrong.

When it comes to developing a safe work method statement, there are a few key steps that we need to follow. The first step is to identify the hazards associated with the task. This could include things like working at heights, working with heavy machinery, or working in confined spaces. Once we’ve identified the hazards, we need to assess the risks associated with each one. This will help us to determine the controls that we need to put in place to minimise the risk of injury or harm.

The next step is to develop the actual safe work method statement. This should be done in consultation with the workers who will be carrying out the task. They will have valuable insights into the potential hazards and the best way to mitigate them. The safe work method statement should be detailed and comprehensive, leaving no room for ambiguity or confusion. It should include a step-by-step guide for completing the task safely, as well as any equipment or personal protective equipment that is required.

Once the safe work method statement has been developed, it needs to be communicated to all workers who will be involved in the task. This could include a training session or a toolbox talk. Workers need to understand the risks associated with the task and the controls that have been put in place to minimise those risks. They also need to be aware of the emergency procedures in case something goes wrong.

Finally, it’s important to regularly review and update the safe work method statement. This should be done whenever there are changes to the task, the equipment being used, or the workers involved. It’s also a good idea to review the safe work method statement after an incident or near miss. This will help us to identify any areas where we can improve and make the task even safer for our workers.

Now, I know that developing a safe work method statement might seem like a lot of work, but trust me, it’s worth it. Not only does it ensure the safety of our workers, but it also helps us to be more productive and efficient. When workers know exactly what they need to do and how to do it safely, they can work with confidence and focus on getting the job done right.

In conclusion, developing safe work method statements for high-risk environments is an essential part of ensuring the safety of our workers. By following a few key steps, we can develop comprehensive and effective safe work method statements that keep our workers safe and productive. Remember, safety should always be our top priority, and investing in safe work method statements is one of the best ways to achieve that goal. So, let’s get to work and make sure that everyone goes home safely at the end of the day. Thanks for tuning in, and I’ll catch you all next time.

Cheers,
