Here is some safety information regarding trailer safe

A Trailer Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a document that outlines the hazards and risks associated with working with trailers and the control measures that will be implemented to mitigate these risks. The purpose of a Trailer SWMS is to provide a safe and healthy working environment for workers, contractors, and the public.

The following is an example of a Trailer Safe Work Method Statement:

Hazard identification: a) Trailer coupling b) Load shifting c) Trailer tipping d) Struck-by hazards e) Fall hazards

Risk assessment:

a) Trailer coupling: The risk of injury is high due to the weight of the trailer and the force required to connect the trailer to the towing vehicle. Control measures include the use of chocks to prevent the trailer from rolling, ensuring the towing vehicle is on level ground, and using mechanical aids to lift and connect the trailer.

b) Load shifting: The risk of injury is high if the load shifts during transit, causing the trailer to become unstable. Control measures include ensuring the load is evenly distributed, securing the load with appropriate restraints, and regularly checking the load during transit.

c) Trailer tipping: The risk of injury is high if the trailer tips over, especially when travelling around corners or over uneven ground. Control measures include ensuring the trailer is not overloaded, reducing speed when travelling around corners or over uneven ground, and maintaining the trailer’s brakes and tyres.

d) Struck-by hazards: The risk of injury is high if a worker or member of the public is struck by a moving trailer or the towing vehicle. Control measures include wearing high-visibility clothing, using hazard signage to warn others of the presence of trailers and towing vehicles, and implementing traffic management plans.

e) Fall hazards: The risk of injury is high if a worker falls from a trailer, especially when loading or unloading. Control measures include ensuring the trailer has appropriate safety features such as handrails and non-slip surfaces, using appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety harnesses and safety footwear, and providing appropriate training and supervision for workers.

Control measures: a) Use chocks to prevent the trailer from rolling when coupling and uncoupling b) Ensure the towing vehicle is on level ground before coupling the trailer c) Use mechanical aids to lift and connect the trailer d) Ensure the load is evenly distributed and secured with appropriate restraints e) Regularly check the load during transit f) Ensure the trailer is not overloaded g) Reduce speed when travelling around corners or over uneven ground h) Maintain the trailer’s brakes and tyres i) Wear high-visibility clothing j) Use hazard signage to warn others of the presence of trailers and towing vehicles k) Implement traffic management plans l) Ensure the trailer has appropriate safety features such as handrails and non-slip surfaces m) Use appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety harnesses and safety footwear n) Provide appropriate training and supervision for workers.

Emergency procedures: a) In the event of an accident or incident, immediately stop work and provide first aid as required b) Contact emergency services if necessary c) Conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and implement appropriate corrective actions to prevent a recurrence.

Gary’s Safety Tips

G’day mate, it’s Gary here, and today we’re talking about something that’s been causing a lot of confusion for workers and employers alike – Safe Work Method Statements, or SWMS for short.

Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “What the heck is a Safe Work Method Statement?” And that’s totally understandable, because it’s not always clear what’s legally required when it comes to workplace safety.

But let me break it down for you: a Safe Work Method Statement is a document that outlines the hazards and risks associated with a particular job or task, and the control measures that will be put in place to mitigate those risks. In other words, it’s a way to make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to workplace safety.

Now, I know that some of you might be thinking, “That sounds like a lot of paperwork and bureaucracy.” And I get it, no one likes doing paperwork. But here’s the thing – a Safe Work Method Statement can actually save lives.

By identifying the potential hazards and risks associated with a particular job or task, and putting in place appropriate control measures, we can help prevent accidents and injuries from occurring in the first place. And that’s something we can all get behind, right?

But I know that sometimes it can be confusing to figure out what’s legally required when it comes to Safe Work Method Statements. And that’s where things can get tricky.

So let me make it as clear as possible: if you’re a worker, your employer is legally required to provide you with a Safe Work Method Statement for any job or task that poses a risk to your health and safety. And if you’re an employer, you’re legally required to prepare a Safe Work Method Statement for any job or task that poses a risk to your workers’ health and safety.

Now, I know that might sound like a lot of work. But here’s the thing – it’s not just about following the law. It’s about doing the right thing.

Because at the end of the day, workplace safety isn’t just about ticking boxes and meeting legal requirements. It’s about making sure that everyone goes home at the end of the day in one piece. It’s about looking out for each other and taking responsibility for our own safety and the safety of those around us.

And that’s why I’m such a big believer in Safe Work Method Statements. Because they’re not just a legal requirement – they’re a way to make sure that we’re all doing our part to create a safe and healthy workplace.

So if you’re feeling confused or overwhelmed when it comes to Safe Work Method Statements, just remember this: it’s not about the paperwork, it’s about the people. It’s about keeping ourselves and our colleagues safe, and doing everything we can to prevent accidents and injuries from happening in the first place.

And if you’re still feeling unsure, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Reach out to your employer or your industry association for guidance and support. Because when it comes to workplace safety, we’re all in this together.

So let’s make sure we’re doing everything we can to create a safe and healthy workplace, one Safe Work Method Statement at a time.

Cheers,
