What is a Safe Work Method Statement?

A SWMS is a document that outlines the high-risk construction work activities that will be performed at a workplace, the hazards that will be present as a result of these activities, and the controls that will be implemented to mitigate the risks.

A single SWMS can be utilised for numerous high-risk construction work activities, such as employing powered mobile plant, working at heights of more than 2 metres, and working near to a road that is used by traffic other than pedestrians.

A SWMS is an administrative control that is used to support higher-order controls, such as engineering controls, that are designed to remove or reduce hazards to health and safety.

A SWMS differs from other documentation such as a Job Safety Analysis or a Safe Operating Procedure in that it focuses on specific jobs or processes. A SWMS isn't meant to be a procedure; rather, it's a tool for supervisors and workers to check and monitor the workplace control measures.   • Secure the load to the tray and lower the tray to the horizontal position. Lower the forks, booms, etc., and make sure the slew locking pins are in the 'lock' position.
  • Make sure the vehicle is incapable of movement.
  • The cable must be inspected for wear or damage.
  • Raise the forks, buckets, etc., for allowing the unit to be loaded freely on to the tray.
  • All connections and slings must be inspected.
  • Check the clearances on booms, etc.
  • Lower scissor lifts.
  • While loading, do not allow any person at the rear of the vehicle.
  • Securely chain the load to the tray for preventing any movement.
  • Make sure of sufficient space behind tray, and before applying parking brakes, position the truck.
  • Take up the load on the winch cable, remove the holding chains from the unit and release the brakes. Raise the forks, buckets, etc.,for ensuring ground clearance.
  • After removing all persons from the truck, activate the tilt control and raise the tray.
  • Use the winch control and allow the unit to roll down the tray.
  • Stop the unit, apply brakes and disconnect the winch cable from the towing points.
  • Return the tray to its transport position and stow the ropes, chains, etc., in their proper places.
  • Look out for overhead obstacles.
  • Never remove holding chains until the load is taken up on cable.
  • While unloading, make sure all persons are clear of the rear of the vehicle.
  • Make sure the unit remains securely braked, before the cable is removed.
  • In cases where the plant or some items of the plant cannot roll down, and must be driven on to and off the truck, the operator must stay within the machine at all times when it is in motion, and wear a safety belt ora harness to keep from falling if there is such a risk. The machine must be kept attached to the winch cable during loading and unloading. The winch must be operated for ensuring the machine will not roll out of control in case of any drive failure.
  • Look out for overhead obstacles.
  • Make sure the ramps are parallel.
  • The holding chains must not be removed until the load is ready to be unloaded.
  • While unloading, make sure all persons are clear of the rear of the vehicle.
