What is a Safe Work Method Statement?

A SWMS is a document that outlines the high-risk construction work activities that will be performed at a workplace, the hazards that will be present as a result of these activities, and the controls that will be implemented to mitigate the risks.

A single SWMS can be utilised for numerous high-risk construction work activities, such as employing powered mobile plant, working at heights of more than 2 metres, and working near to a road that is used by traffic other than pedestrians.

A SWMS is an administrative control that is used to support higher-order controls, such as engineering controls, that are designed to remove or reduce hazards to health and safety.

  • Before commencing removal, all nuts must be cracked. To loosen and remove, use impact wrench or extension bar on socket wrench if air tool unavailable hearing and eye protection is necessary and must be worn when using air tools.
  • Remove the top nuts last to prevent the wheel from tipping over and falling off the studs foot protection is necessary and must be worn.
  • Use a crane or obtain adequate assistance to lower the wheel and tyre to ground hand protection is necessary and must be worn.
  • Use a bead breaker to break the tyre away from the rim or the locking ring wearing eye protection is necessary.
  • Once the tyre is completely free from its lock ring, use a tyre bar to remove the ring never reuse any faulty tyres.
  • Turn the wheel over and break the bead away from the rear rim of wheel use mechanical aids or obtain assistance with heavy objects.
  • Turn the wheel back over and lift the tyre from the wheel.
  • Always use a needle gun or a rotating wire brush to remove rust from wheel and rims hearing and eye protection is necessary and must be worn when using air tools.
  • Clean all rust from the locking ring, and inspect closely for pitting and wear.
  • Replace the locking ring if badly worn or if rust pitting is more than on the surface never use a faulty locking ring.
  • Always clean the wheel completely apply metal primer to all exposed metal surfaces make sure all bare metal is protected.
  • Avoid solvent-based paints touching eye and skin wearing safety glasses and gloves is necessary.

  • Fit tube to tyre, place the tube protector in place, and inflate sufficiently to hold tube and protector in place while tyre is being fitted to rim make sure that the valve stem is properly aligned with valve opening.

  • Refit wheel nuts starting at top to prevent wheel from falling off the studs make sure that the lifting gear or slings will prevent wheel falling.
  • Tighten all nuts to proper torque in a criss-cross sequence to make sure that all studs carry an equal loading never lubricate threads and never over tighten nuts on studs.
  • Loosen valve to release pressure, then remove valve completely fill tyre with water only after refitting to machine.
  • Rotate the wheel so that the valve is at top position, fit water supply and fill tyre.
  • Remove the hose and allow excess water to drain, then replace valve.
  • Inflate the tyre again to the proper operating pressure, and fit valve cap to valve.
  • Raise machine on jack, remove stands or packing, and lower with jack.
  • Check the pressure and wheel studs again after machine has been operated to make sure that the wheel has not loosened or tyre is notleaking.
